CUSTOMERS SET TO FEEL THE HEAT OF POWERGEN PRICE HIKE

11.9* per cent price increase in gas prices and 7.6* per cent for electricity

Fourth price hike since Jan 2004

Average family bill up by £44 for gas and £26 for electricity

Customers’ gas bills are set to increase by £44 with electricity bills rising by £26 following the recent price hike announcement by Powergen, one of the largest providers of UK energy according to independent switching comparison service, uSwitch.com.

From today, customers moving to Powergen will pay 11.9 per cent more for gas and 7.6 per cent more for electricity. Existing customers will see the price they pay for gas and electricity increase from 31 August, bringing total increases since the beginning of 2004 for gas of £106 and electricity of £74.

Alan Tattersall, Head of Products at uSwitch.com comments: “Powergen have said that by increasing energy prices now this will help their customers to budget for higher winter bills. However, this still is an extremely bitter pill to swallow, and whatever way you look at it, the harsh reality is that customers will still be paying through the nose for their energy.”

“Even with the announcement of additional energy efficiency measures and rebates for Age Concern customers, this still remains the single largest gas price hike Powergen have applied over the past 18 months. “The savvy customer will switch now and offset these immediate price increases – customers should shop around for the best deal and consider capped tariffs as a way to curb rising prices.”

Staywarm and existing capped customers will not be affected by these price rises.
